FAQ
Questions, answered
The things people most often ask about bioidentical hormone therapy. If your question isn't here, please get in touch.
Where does BHRT come from?
BHRT is converted from plant sources — diosgenin from wild yam, or beta-sitosterol from soya beans. It is manufactured into a micronised powder and is available in cream or oral forms. It was first discovered in the 1940s.
Are all the hormones you prescribe natural?
The hormones themselves are derived from natural plant sources, and their chemical and molecular structure is identical to that of the hormones naturally produced by your own glands.
Do I have to be on treatment for life?
No. BHRT is individually tailored, and the decision to continue or complete treatment is one we make together. If you're finding ongoing treatment beneficial and your quality of life has improved, we're often happy for you to stay on it with continued monitoring.
How quickly does treatment work?
Treatment is often surprisingly quick — results are generally seen within 3–6 weeks. If symptoms are severe, it can take 3–4 months to reach the desired improvement.
Why did my doctor not tell me about this treatment?
Most doctors aren't familiar with BHRT, and some don't recognise hormonal imbalance as a condition to treat. Much of doctors' further education is funded by pharmaceutical companies, and because BHRT isn't sold over the counter or provided on the NHS, it often stays off the radar. Many doctors first learn about BHRT from their patients.
